Sometime soon Before you leave the room I’ll say the things I always meant to say And late one night Well we just might Catch a plane to somewhere far away And sometime soon Before you leave the room I’ll say the things I always meant to say Maybe one day

They're closing up the last good place in town They'll change the name, or pull it down It's the same old stuff, happens all around So hold on tight, to what you've found On Imelda Marcos boulevard Times have changed, times are hard They called Vince Taylor but he never showed You won't see him in Chalk Farm Road So we waited all day for the night We don't need the sunshine Cause we look better under neon light So we waited all day for the night Who needs the sunshine Cause we look better under neon light Well they've changed the lock, but they lost the key But you know somehow it still looks good to me All the nights we've seen, staring back at me All those nights, they'll stay with me They'll stay with me All those nights, they'll stay with me All those nights, stay with me All those nights, stay with me

I'm painting the town A new shade of black I'll watch it burn it down I'll turn my back Ground where I stood Can wither and die Don't turn your head When you walk by Yeah they nailed up a sign On my bedroom door Said he's gone to a better place He knew before Painting the town A new shade of black Don't turn your head Don't ever look back Well the sun never shines in this part of town Didn't see it come up, never watched it go down Yeah they nailed up a sign On my bedroom door Said he's gone to a better place Than he knew before I'll come to rest Up on the hill Everybody who's gone there They're up there still Went painting the town A deep shade of black Watched it burn down They're not coming back

Don't try to remember Don't look back don't make a sound We don't need anything Or anyone around Just you and me Lit up like a christmas tree Barely able to see Lost in another world Just you & me Lit up like a christmas tree Barely able to see Lost in another world Just you & me Just you & me Sometimes you wonder What it takes to fail here in this town It's all been beaten down The world turned upside down And that's how it always seems to be So show me another world Another place to be Here's something We left behind It don't matter And we don't mind Lit up like a christmas tree Barely able to see Lost in another world Just you & me Just you & me Just you & me

Nineteen Sixty-Nine There was never enough time There was never enough time Nineteen Seventy-Two I was scared of you in Seventy-Two Nineteen Seventy-Three Thought I could see What was wrong with me Ah but Seventy-Four Seventy-Four All I could hear Was a slamming door Nineteen Seventy-Five When I first hit the town Back in Seventy-Five But it was too late By Seventy-Eight Now I’m gone Now I’m gone But in Sixty-Nine Thought I was doing fine In Sixty-Nine Ah haven’t you turned out the lights Haven’t you turned out the lights And didn’t we make you sing Didn’t we make you proud And I know You remember everything But in Sixty-Nine There was never enough time There was never enough time Two Thousand and Two All I could do Was to write to you

I’ve seen your face Sometimes after midnight They’re piling up the furniture Around us again It all turns blue Sometimes after midnight When you close your eyes What do you see And I passed out One evening in an upstairs room I didn’t need my collar felt But that’s how they are All those lights In London after midnight You couldn’t find yourself a cab If you begged on your knees In London after midnight There’s always another place to go After midnight Now they’re piling up the furniture Around us again And where are you Now it’s after midnight When you close your eyes What do you see In London after midnight

You might as well just go to sleep Headline news will make you weep You can't change things anyway You know you'll never stop the rain Loosen up and start again It’s just another day Nothing much means all that much Most things don't matter at all Nothing much means all that much Most things don't matter at all The day the earth caught fire I was busy somewhere else Didn't watch it on TV The day the earth stood still Told them I was feeling ill Didn't matter much to me Nothing much means all that much Most things don't matter at all Nothing much means all that much Most things don't matter at all The day the earth caught fire I was busy somewhere else Didn't matter much to me The day the earth stood still Told them I was feeling ill Didn't matter much to me

Used to have a car but it fell apart Right from the start And I never thought things Would go this way Till today And you might tell me That it’s not true But if I had all the money I’d spent On you I’d spend it on you Well I know a place just down the street Where all The antisocial people meet Ah but that won’t do Not for me And you Well it was one of those nights When we needed something Never found out what we wanted until you said I need someone like you Well If I had everything I’d wasted I’d probably waste it again But if I had all the money I’d spent On you I’d spend it on you What else could I do Well it was one of those nights When I needed something Never found out what I wanted until you said I need someone like you When I think of all the time I wasted Yeah when I think of all the time I wasted Where were you

Friday She said to me You’re not the one That’s good for me So long Good luck Goodbye Our ship came in But then it sunk So find yourself Another drunk Alright… Our ship came in But now it’s sunk I found myself Another drunk Friday She said to me You’re not the one That’s good for me So long Good luck Goodbye

It's way past three And I'm still here Lying down waiting for the fog to clear David Allan Coe's singing "Whiskey please take my mind" Trying hard to leave it all behind Well don't wait up Cause I'm falling down 12 straight shots make the room spin round Don't mess with someone whose problems are worse than your own Sometimes you're better off on your own Well here's my story It's sad but false I lost my heart to the girl who danced the Tennessee waltz Her hair was yellow And her eyes were the deepest blue I swear to God she looked a lot like you Well the dawn comes up And the sun shines down And Ruby's taken her love to another town Where the lights are bright And the signs say "We never close" Right now we could all use one of those Yeah the world fell apart brick by brick My guardian angel took the day off sick My hands keep shaking and there's nothing left to pour And I can't even hear you any more One more time before you close the door Say goodnight to the face on the bar room floor Say goodnight to the face on the bar room floor

about

These songs were all written on a four-track cassette-based tape recorder, often late at night, wherever I happened to be living at the time. I’d then play them to our band, The Flaming Stars, and we’d record group versions, which would be released on LPs and singles, but sometimes – often in the case of the quieter numbers – there’s something you capture right at the start on the first recording which inevitably changes once you move on to the next stage. You never play a song the same way twice, and the first attempt is interesting because there’s no pre-existing blueprint in your head for it, you’re not replicating anything.

Out of over a hundred songs I’ve written, the ones here had a particular quality in that initial backing track which still appealed to me. Vocals at the time were usually sung too quietly, generally so as not to wake up any flatmates, and also mixed lower so that the instrumentation would come through properly as a guide to how the song should go. What you have here are eight tracks which combine the original backing tracks with proper studio vocals and the occasional simple overdub, plus two completely new versions of songs of mine where I didn’t have a surviving four-track recording that fit the bill. All of the latter work was done at Ed Deegan’s fine analogue studio, Gizzard.
A new album full of old songs.
